How to Break the Patterns That Keep You Stuck: Why Awareness Is the First Step to Lasting Change Creating Change by Design™
Written by Kristi on August 31, 2026

Dear Friend,
Welcome to the very first edition of Creating Change by Design™.
Every month, I’ll share a lesson I’ve learned from nearly three decades of helping leaders, organizations, entrepreneurs, educators, healthcare professionals, and government agencies navigate change.
Sometimes the lesson comes from a CEO.
Sometimes it comes from a teacher.
Sometimes it comes from someone quietly carrying more than anyone realizes.
And sometimes, it comes from the people closest to me.
My focus is simple.
That somewhere in these few minutes together, you’ll discover one idea that changes the way you think, the way you act, and ultimately, the way you feel and lead.
Because after working with thousands of people over the years, I’ve learned one truth that has never failed me:
Transformation is Change by Design, not by Default.
If you’ve been searching for how to break the patterns that keep you stuck, I hope this letter reminds you that lasting change doesn’t begin by changing your circumstances. It begins by becoming aware of the patterns that created them.
The Most Important Change I Ever Witnessed Didn’t Happen Inside a Boardroom
It happened inside my own home.
For years, I watched my wife and business partner, Maria accomplish extraordinary things while carrying something invisible that many high achievers know all too well.
She had spent much of her life living in survival mode growing up in the hands of Domestic Violence. Like so many people who have experienced prolonged stress and trauma, her nervous system became incredibly efficient at protecting her. Research has shown that chronic stress and trauma can affect areas of the brain involved in emotional regulation, memory, learning, and executive function. Those adaptations are the brain’s remarkable way of helping us survive—but they can also keep us from fully living. And in Maria’s case, this prolonged stress actually caused what her Dr. referred to as “Shrinkage of The Brain”. I am sure that is not the medical terminology… I can also say, from an energetic perspective, it makes sense- Fight or Flight, Dukes up or Retreat.
Maria often described it as always being “on.” Always anticipating. Always preparing for the next challenge before the current one was even over.
Many organizations are filled with people like Maria.
They are productive.
Responsible.
Reliable.
Successful.
Yet underneath the surface, they are exhausted.
What inspired me wasn’t watching Maria become someone different.
It was watching her become more of herself.
As she intentionally changed the patterns she practiced every day—through coaching, reflection, nervous system regulation, intentional habits, and a commitment to personal growth—the greatest one was her dedication to daily Breath Work. I watched something remarkable happen.
Her thinking became clearer.
Her confidence became steadier.
Her leadership became stronger.
She stopped reacting to life.
She started designing it.
That journey reinforced something I now teach every leader we work with:
The brain follows the patterns we practice.
Change the patterns…
and eventually you change your life.
Your Brain Was Never Designed to Live in Emergency Mode
Have you ever noticed that the moment one problem gets solved, your mind immediately searches for the next one?
That isn’t weakness.
It’s biology.
Today’s workplace rewards urgency.
Emails never stop.
Meetings overlap.
Artificial Intelligence is accelerating expectations.
Notifications compete for our attention every minute of the day.
Our nervous systems were designed for moments of survival—not a lifetime of constant stimulation.
The result?
People aren’t simply tired.
They’re mentally overloaded.
At TG Transformational Gangstas®, we believe performance doesn’t begin with productivity.
It begins with regulation.
When you calm the nervous system, you unlock clearer thinking, stronger communication, healthier leadership, and better decisions.
Ironically, you often accomplish more.
The reward isn’t checking another item off your list.
The greatest reward is finally feeling at peace while accomplishing meaningful work.
Awareness Creates Structure
Our theme this month is Structure.
When most people hear that word, they think of calendars, schedules, and systems.
I think of patterns.
Because your life today is largely the result of the patterns you’ve practiced yesterday.
The conversations you avoid.
The thoughts you repeat.
The stress you normalize.
The stories you tell yourself.
The boundaries you don’t set.
Structure isn’t something you install.
It’s something you practice.
And every pattern either strengthens the life you’re building—or quietly works against it.
Our 45-Second Reset™
You don’t need an hour to change your day.
Sometimes 45 seconds is enough.
When stress begins taking over:
- Stop.
- Place both feet firmly on the floor.
- Inhale slowly through your nose.
- Exhale twice as long as you inhaled.
- Repeat five times.
- Then ask yourself:
“What is the next best decision I can make with the tools I have right now?”
That one question interrupts fear and restores clarity.
Three Practices to Begin Changing Your Patterns
1. Notice Before You Change
Awareness always comes before transformation.
Pay attention to the thoughts and habits you repeat automatically.
You cannot redesign what you refuse to recognize.
2. Replace “I Have To” With “I Get To”
Language shapes emotion.
“I have another meeting.”
becomes
“I get another opportunity to influence.”
Small changes in language create significant changes in mindset.
3. Finish Every Day With Intention
Before ending your workday, ask yourself:
- What went well today?
- What can wait until tomorrow?
- What matters most next?
Your brain relaxes when it knows there’s a plan.
A Thought to Leave You With
The organizations that thrive over the next decade won’t simply be the ones with the most advanced technology.
They will be the ones that understand their greatest competitive advantage has always been—and always will be—the people.
Technology can improve systems.
Artificial Intelligence can improve efficiency.
But only emotionally healthy people build extraordinary cultures.
That’s why at TG Transformational Gangstas®, we focus on what I call the Human Infrastructure of every organization.
Because when people feel safe…
they think better.
When they think better…
they lead better.
When they lead better…
everything else begins to change.
If you’ve been searching for how to break the patterns that keep you stuck, remember this:
You don’t need a new life.
You need to commit to new patterns.
And those patterns begin with one intentional decision today.

Oh and Maria’s Brain, since offering herself more time and more dedicated oxygen to the brain, she is seeing and feeling the positive effects and so are her Doc’s!
